Weather in Shoreham – August 2018

 

Wet and Rather Warm

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during August 2018 in Shoreham was 22.1 Celsius (72F), and that was almost 2 degrees Celsius (3.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 14.2 Celsius (58F), and that was  close to the August normal. It appears to have been the warmest August in the area for 15 years.  

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 29.8 Celsius (86F) on the 4th, but there were several other very warm days,  all of these occurring during the first week of August.  On 5 of these days, the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F), including 3 days with highs above 27 Celsius (81F). The warmest of these was the 3rd when 28.7 Celsius (84F) was recorded. After the 7th, the highest temperature was 23.8 Celsius (75F) on the 20th. However, during this somewhat cooler period there were 16 further days when the temperature rose above 20 Celsius (68F). There were no particularly cool days during August, but on 5 days the temperature failed to rise above 19 Celsius (66F). There were 3 of these cooler days during the final week of August,  and the coolest day of the month was the 26th with a high of 18.0 Celsius (64F).

There were several fairly warm nights during August, and on the 4th a minimum of 19.2 Celsius (67F) occurred. There were 6 other nights with lows above 17 Celsius (63F), including 3 consecutive nights beginning on the 19th. The last of these 3 nights had a minimum temperature of 18.6 Celsius (66F), the only other night when the temperature stayed above 18 Celsius (64F). There were several chilly nights, and on 3 occasions the temperature dipped below 10 Celsius (50F). On the 24th, a low of 8.9 Celsius (48F) was measured,  but both the 11th and 25th had minimum temperatures of 8.7 Celsius (48F). 

The sea temperature was around 20 Celsius (68F) early in the month, falling to 19 Celsius (66F) during the second half of August.

Frost

There were no frosts during August. The lowest grass temperature was 6.1 Celsius (43F) on the morning of the 11th.   

Rain

There were 97.8  millimetres (3.9 ins.) of rain during August and that was more than 60% above the monthly average. It was possibly  the wettest August in the area for 8 years. There were 13 days of measurable rain, and that was 2 above the August normal. The first 6 days of the month were dry with unbroken sunshine. A little rain occurred on the evening of the 7th, with heavier rain overnight on the 8th/9th producing nearly 6 millimetres (0.25 ins.) of rain. Rain fell at times through the 9th, but the heaviest rain of the month occurred on the 10th. Showery bursts of rain, torrential in spells,  gave 37.2 millimetres  (1.5 ins.). The following day was dry, but 8 millimetres (0.3 ins.) of rain was recorded on the 12th. Another 5.6 millimetres (0.2 ins.) fell on the 16th, but rain amounts during the following week were small. The 26th was wet for much of the day with some heavy rain and drizzle. Unusually, it was the second fall of the month  over 30 millimetres (1.2 ins.),  with the total for the day reaching 30.7 millimetres (1.2 ins.). The following day was dry, but nearly 4 millimetres (0.2 ins.) of rain fell on the 28th with further rain on the 29th. The last 2 days of August were dry.

Hail

There was no hail observed in this part of Shoreham during August.

Thunder

A slight thunderstorm occurred mid evening on the 7th.

Wind

The winds during August were mostly light or gentle from between southwest and northwest, although there were notable exceptions. The northwesterlies were mostly during the mornings, with southwesterly sea breezes dominating on many afternoons. Even the sea breezes were not particularly strong. At  Shoreham Airport, a gale -force gust of 43 knots (49 mph) was reported during the showery rain on the afternoon of the 10th, with 30 knots (34 mph) occurring late morning on the 19th. West-southwesterly winds reached 31 knots (35 mph) on the 24th, with the other bout of very wet weather on the 26th being accompanied by gusts of 35 knots (40 mph.).    

Fog

No fog was observed in central Shoreham during August
