Very Mild and Rather Wet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Temperature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The average maximum temperature during February 2026 in Shoreham was 10.2 Celsius (50F), and that was around 0.8 Celsius (>1F) above the 10-year average, but more than 1 Celsius (2F) above the 30-year average. The average minimum temperature was 6.7 Celsius (44F), and that was\u00a0close to 2.5 Celsius (4.5F) above the 10-year monthly average, but more than 3 Celsius (5.5F) above the long-term average. Overall, February 2026 was the second mildest in the area since 1880. Only February 2024 was milder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest temperature measured during the month was 13.7 Celsius (57F) on the 25th, but 13.6 Celsius (56F) was recorded on the 24th, and 12.3 Celsius (54F) occurred on the 28th. Remarkably, a further 18 days had maxima ranging from 10 to 12 Celsius (50-54F). Although there were 7 days with maxima below 10 Celsius, no cold days occurred. The lowest highs were 5.9 Celsius (43F) on the 3rd, 6.5 Celsius (44F) on the 14th, and 7.2 Celsius (45F) on the 18th. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were no exceptionally mild nights during February, but a minimum of 9.9 Celsius (50F) occurred on both the 22nd and 27th, with 9.6 Celsius (49F) recorded on both the 11th and 24th. A further 4 minima were between 8 and 9 Celsius (46-48F). On most other nights, the minimum temperature ranged from 5 to 9 Celsius (41-48F). The coldest nights occurred around, and just after, mid month. The lowest temperatures were 1.1 Celsius (34F) on the 14th, 2.0 Celsius on the 17th, and 2.3 Celsius (36F) on the 15th.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sea temperature was 8 or 9 Celsius (46-48F) throughout the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frost<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were no air frosts during February. That was 4 below average for the month. Only 3 grass frosts occurred, and that was 10 below average. The lowest grass temperatures were minus 2.2 Celsius (28F) on both the 14th and 17th, and minus 0.6 Celsius (31F) on the 15th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainfall in February amounted to 82.2\u00a0 millimetres (3.2 inches), which was around 25% above the 10-year monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 25 days, which was 9 days above normal for February, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 15, which was 4 days above average for the month.\u00a0Although only 2 completely dry days occurred, the 13th and 25th (a trace of rain occurred on the 19th), there was no heavy rain recorded. It was often cloudy, damp and drizzly with surfaces almost constantly wet. The month began wet with rain and drizzle producing a total of 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) on the 1st, with 9.4 millimetres (0.37 ins.) measured on the 3rd, and 9.6 millimetres (0.38 ins.) occurring on the 5th. Daily totals were then below 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) until mid- month. On the 15th, periods of rain and drizzle gave a total of 11.8 millimetres (0.46 ins.), making it the wettest day of the month. On the 18th, there were 9.6 millimetres (0.38 ins.) of rain, but although drizzle and rain often fell, daily totals were under 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wind<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atlantic weather systems continued to track eastwards at a lower latitude than normal, with their parent low-pressure areas often slowing and decaying over the southern parts of the British Isles. In Shoreham, the average daily pressure reading was 15 millibars below normal, a similar negative anomaly to January. Southwesterly winds were dominant, accounting for around 36% of daily readings. Both southeasterly and northwesterly winds were dominant on 18% of days, with most of the rest of the month cyclonic variable. No exceptionally windy days occurred, but it was often breezy during the first and third weeks of the month. However, at Shoreham Airport, the first gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) did not occur until the afternoon of the 16th, when west to northwesterlies gusted to 33 knots (38 mph). Gusts of 34 and 35 knots (39-40 mph) from an east to southeast direction occurred from late morning to early evening. There were no further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) during February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fog<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fog patches were observed on the evening of the 25th; otherwise, it was often misty in association with drizzle, and at times, low cloud was observed shrouding the Downs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
