This was the lowest temperature recorded in any month at this site since records began in 2017, and it appears to be the lowest January temperature in this area for 15 years. At Shoreham Airport the 6th may well have been the coldest January night since 1987.

The sea temperature was 8 or 9 Celsius (46-48F) throughout the month.

Wind

Atlantic weather systems tracked eastwards at a lower latitude than normal, with their parent low-pressure areas often slowing and decaying over the southern parts of the British Isles. In Shoreham, the average daily pressure reading was nearly 15 millibars below normal, and there were 10 consecutive days, beginning on the 21st, with readings below 1000 millibars. This is a new record sequence for any month at this site. Unsurprisingly, it was often windy, with the majority, around two-thirds, of the winds blowing from between southwest and northwest. On most other days, southeasterly winds prevailed. At Shoreham Airport, southwesterly winds increased late on the 6th, and gusts reached 33 knots (38 mph) in the late evening, before peaking at 38 knots (43 mph) in the early hours of the 7th. A very deep area of low pressure passed by close to Shoreham on the evening of the 8th with pressure falling at a rate of 4 to 5 millibars an hour, and with a central pressure below 968 millibars. Southwesterly winds gusted to 41 knots (47 mph) around midnight, with the following northwesterly wind gusting to 35 knots (40 mph) on the afternoon of the 9th. Southerlies, ahead of the next depression, gusted to 35 knots (40 mph) on the evening of the 11th. On the late afternoon and evening of the 15th, southerlies gusted above 30 knots (34 mph), with a peak of 33 knots (38 mph) ahead of the post-cold front southwesterlies. An increase of southerly winds on the evening of the 20th culminated in a gust of 37 knots (42 mph) just before midnight. South-southeasterly winds gusted to 33 knots (38 mph) around midday on the 21st, and winds from a similar direction reached 31 knots (35 mph) in the early hours of the 24th. Measurable rain fell on 14 days, which was 6 days below normal for December, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 10, which was 4 days below average for the month.  The month began wet, with rain or drizzle throughout the day on the 1st, leading to a total of 6.8 millimetres (0.27 ins.). The following day was showery, with some of the showers heavy, and another 11.8 millimetres (0.46 ins.) of rain were measured. Occasional rain fell on the following 3 days, but the highest total was only 3.6 millimetres (0.14 ins.) on the 21st. The remainder of the month (10 days) was dry.

Hail

Small hail occurred during heavy showers early and mid evening on the 2nd.

Wind

Atlantic weather systems regularly crossed the country during the first 3 weeks of December with southwesterly winds dominating, but with the occasional northwest wind occurring after the passage of cold fronts. Winds were often quite strong, but during the week before Christmas, pressure rose and an anticyclone developed. This was mainly centred to the north of the country, allowing gentler winds to blow from a northeast or easterly direction. At Shoreham Airport, the first day of the month was windy, with several gusts from the southwest reaching 41 knots (47 mph), and 1 in the late afternoon peaking at 42 knots (48 mph). An isolated gust of 35 knots (40 mph) occurred as a cold front moved through Shoreham late in the morning on the 4th. The evening of the 5th was very windy with southerly gusts of 44 knots (50 mph). The wind veered southwesterly, but it remained breezy, with a gust of 34 knots (39 mph) occurring in the early hours of the 6th. Late in the afternoon on the 7th, southwesterly winds gusted to 33 knots (38 mph), but after a short lull, southwesterlies gusted to 36 knots (41 mph) early in the evening on the 9th. The evening of the 17th became windy, with southwesterly gusts rising to 32 knots (37 mph) around midnight. It stayed windy through the 18th, with a top gust of 37 knots (42 mph) during the late afternoon. Although pressure rose markedly towards the end of the month, there were 2 more windy days. On the 24th, northeasterly winds gusted to 32 knots around lunchtime, and on the 25th, gusts of 34 knots (38 mph) were measured from a similar direction.

Fog

Fog was observed on 2 days during December. On the 7th, drizzle, mist and fog occurred for much of the day as mild, moist air spread north from the sea. Completely different fog occurred on the 31st, as a gentle northwest wind blew patches of freezing fog across Shoreham from the Adur river valley.
