Eventually Extremely Warm
The average maximum temperature during June 2026 in Shoreham was 22.2 Celsius (72F), which was 0.8 Celsius (1.5F) above the 10-year average. This was the 2nd highest average maximum for June in the area since before 1880. Only June 2023 was warmer. The average minimum temperature was 14.8 Celsius (59F), which was 1.8 Celsius (2.7F) above the 10-year monthly average. This was the highest average minimum since records began. Overall, it was the 2nd warmest June, behind the June of 2023. Interestingly, since 1880, the 3 warmest Junes have all occurred during the last 4 years.
The highest temperature measured during the month was 37.1 Celsius (99F) on the 25th. This was the hottest day in the area since before 1880. Although the weather station is not on a site officially recognised by the Met. Office, the maximum temperature was probably bona fide. A site 2 km to the east, but 200 m closer to the coast, had a high of 36.9 Celsius (99F), and it was the sea breeze that was the governing factor in this remarkable event. As seen in the graph below, the temperature was capped by the southeasterly breeze, but the return of the east-northeasterly, blowing across over 10 km of urban development, in the late afternoon, was enough to take the temperature into uncharted territory for June. Merryfield (Somerset) claimed the ‘official’ maximum for the day, and for June, with a high of 36.7 Celsius (98F). However, that record only stood for a day as Santon Downham (Suffolk) recorded 37.3 Celsius (99F) on the 26th.

After the 25th, other maxima almost pale into insignificance; nevertheless, the 35.7 Celsius (96F) recorded on the 24th was higher than the previous UK June high of 35.6 Celsius (96F) recorded in Southampton in 1976. Highs of 32.5 and 31.2 Celsius (91 and 88F) occurred on the 23rd and 22nd, respectively. The 21st and 27th were the only other days with highs above 25 Celsius (77F), although a further 11 days had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F). All of the warm weather occurred during the second half of June. In fact, there were no maximum temperatures above 20 Celsius (68F) before the 14th, and no maxima below 20 Celsius (68F) after the 13th. Although there were no particularly cool days, the average maximum temperature for the first half of June was 3 degrees Celsius (>5F) below average. There were 3 days when the temperature failed to reach 17 Celsius (63F). The 9th, 10th and 11th had highs of 16.9. 16.4 and 15.4 Celsius (62, 62 and 60F), respectively.
There were many warm nights during June, including 4, so-called, tropical nights when the temperature failed to fall below 20 Celsius (68F). The warmest night was the 26th, with a minimum of 23.3 Celsius (74F), but although this was a record at this site in Shoreham, other places in the UK had warmer nights. The minimum on the 26th occurred late in the night as the gentle northeasterly wind veered south to southwesterly. Earlier in the night, the temperature was exceptionally high. After an evening when the temperature hovered between 28 and 29 Celsius (82-84F), a rise occurred after midnight, this peaking at 29.9 Celsius (86F) at 0100 hours. Other minima during this exceptional spell of warmth were 21.9, 21.1 and 20.0 Celsius (72, 70 and 68F) on the nights of the 24th, 25th and 23rd respectively. A further 3 nights, the 22nd, 27th and 28th, had lows above 18 Celsius (64F). On most other nights (20) the minimum ranged from 10 to 16 Celsius (50-61F), with the lowest values generally occurring early in the month. There were 3 cooler nights. The 9th, 10th and 11th had lows of 8.7, 9.9 and 9.1 Celsius (48, 50 and 48F).
The sea temperature ranged from 16 to 18 Celsius (61-64F) during the first 3 weeks of June, but then rose to 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F).
Frost
There were no frosts during June. The lowest grass temperature was 5.0 Celsius (41F) on the 9th.
Rain
Rainfall during June amounted to 47.0 millimetres (1.85 inches), which was 17% above the 10-year monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 16 days, which was 6 days above normal for June, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 11, which was 4 days above average for the month. Rain commenced on the evening of the 1st, and by 0900 GMT on the following morning 16.0 millimetres (0.63 ins.) had fallen, which was more than one third of the monthly total. There were no completely dry days between the 2nd and 11th, but much of the rain was light, and only 4 days had totals above 2 millimetres (0.08 ins.). The wettest of these was the 3rd, 7th and 11th with 6.2, 5.6 and 4.8 millimetres (0.24, 0.22 and 0.19 ins.) respectively. Between the 12th and the end of the month only 4.2 millimetres (0.17 ins.) of rain fell with just 1 wet day. That was on the 18th when 2.4 millimetres (0.09 ins.) were measured.
Hail
There was no hail observed in this part of Shorteham.
Thunder
Thunder was heard on 5 days during June. On the 2nd, thunder was heard several times during showers that occurred mid-afternoon and early in the evening. On the 18th, there was 1 clap of thunder early in the afternoon, and there were several rumbles of thunder from high-level castellanus cloud early in the morning on the 23rd, but with no rain. Thunder and lightning occurred for around 90 minutes late on the evening of the 26th, but with no measurable rain. Further thunder occurred in the early hours of the 27th, and again during the evening, but both events only produced a total of 12 millimetres (0.04 ins.) of rain.
Snow
No sleet or snow was observed in this part of Shoreham.
Wind
Perhaps surprisingly, June was a southwesterly month, with winds from between south and west dominant on two-thirds of the days, although there was a marked difference between the cool and brisk sou’westers that often blew day and night early in the month, and the light winds that morphed into afternoon sea breezes during the second half of June. At Shoreham Airport, southwesterly winds gusted to 32 knots (37 mph) on the afternoon of the 2nd, and the 3rd, a very windy day for the time of year, had a gust of 41 knots (48 mph) during the afternoon, and strong winds then continued into the 4th, with 39 knots (45 mph) recorded during the afternoon. After a lull on the 5th, several southwesterly gusts exceeded 40 knots (46 mph) on the afternoon of the 6th, with a peak gust of 42 knots (48 mph) mid-evening. Southwesterly gusts reached 33 knots (38 mph) on the afternoon of the 9th, with a similar direction and peak gust on the afternoon of the 11th. No further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred during the remainder of the month.
Fog
Mist , low cloud and fog occurred at times during the morning of both the 19th and 20th.
