Rather Cold and Wet

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during January 2025 in Shoreham was 7.3 Celsius (45F), and that was 1 Celsius (<2F) below normal. The average minimum temperature was 2.5 Celsius (37F), and that was also 1 Celsius (<2F) below the January normal.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 11.8 Celsius (53F) on the 5th, but 11.4 Celsius (53F) occurred on the 1st, and a further 5 days had maxima above 10 Celsius (50F), including 3 consecutive days, commencing on the 26th. On most other days (16) the maximum temperature ranged from 5 to 10 celsius (41-50F), but there were several colder days. In fact, 8 days had maxima below 5 Celsius (41F), including 4 consecutive days, beginning on the 8th. The temperature failed to reach 4 Celsius (39F) on only 3 of these days. The 18th and 19th had maxima of 3.2 and 3.9 Celsius (38-39F) respectively, but the coldest day of the month was the 10th, with a high of 3.1 Celsius (38F).       

Only 1 very mild night occurred in January, and that was the first night of the month, when a minimum of 10.8 Celsius (51F) was recorded. The next mildest night was the 28th, with a low of 8.9 Celsius (48F), although a further 3 nights, the 15th, 16th and 27th, had minima above 7 Celsius (45F). The majority of nights (17) had minima ranging from minus 1 to plus 4 Celsius (30-39F), although there were several colder nights. A total of 5 nights, the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th had minima below minus 2 Celsius (28F), but only 2 of these nights had minima below minus 3 Celsius (27F). On the 3rd, minus 3.1 Celsius (27F) was recorded, and on the 12th a low of minus 3.7 Celsius (25F) occurred.   

The sea temperature, around 10 Celsius (50F) at the beginning of January, fell close to 7 Celsius (45F) by the end of the month.

Frost

There were 9 air frosts in January, and that was 3 above average. Although the frost on the 12th bordered on moderate (the minimum was minus 3.7 Celsius (25F)), the other recorded frosts were slight, with 3 of the nights having minima above minus 1 Celsius (30F). Only 3 of the air frosts occurred after mid month, with the coldest night on the 20th, with a low of minus 1.2 Celsius (30F). There were 19 grass frosts during January, and that was 6 above the average. A total of 11 grass frosts occurred before mid-month, including on 8 consecutive nights beginning on the 7th. The other 8 grass frosts occurred after the 19th. On 6 nights, all during the first half of January, grass temperatures dipped below minus 5 Celsius (23F). The lowest reading was minus 7.8 Celsius (18F), with this occurring on 3 nights, the 3rd, 10th and 12th.

Rain

Rainfall during January amounted to 118.6  millimetres (4.7 ins.), which was around 70% above the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 15 days, which was 2 below normal for January, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 10, which was also 2 days below the average.  The year began wet, with 17.8 millimetres (0.7 ins.) measured on the 1st. The following 2 days were dry, but 32.0 millimetres (1.26 ins.) of rain fell on the 4th, and that was the wettest January day in Shoreham for 16 years. It rained all day on the 5th with another 14.0 millimetres (0.55 ins.) added to the monthly total. Apart from the 8th, when 10 millimetres (0.4 ins.) were recorded, the period between the 6th and 20th was largely dry, with only 0.4 millimetres (0.02 ins.) recorded. Half of that was from melted frost on the night of the 11th. After the 20th, the month was changeable with only 1 dry day, the 25th. Some of the rain was heavy with 11.6 millimetres (0.46 ins.) falling on the 23rd, another 12.8 millimetres (0.5 ins.) measured on the 26th, and over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) on each of the last 3 days of the month.  

Hail

No hail was observed in this part of Shoreham during the month.  

Thunder

No thunder was heard in this part of Shoreham during January.

Snow

Sleet and wet snow fell from mid afternoon until early evening on the 8th. Around 1 centimetre (< 1 in.) of slush accumulated on most surfaces by late afternoon, but had thawed by the morning of the 9th. However, the Shoreham Airport webcam showed snow on the higher parts of Shoreham, and this remained visible for several days.

Wind

January was not a ‘southwesterly’ month, although winds from that direction were dominant on roughly a third of the days. The middle part of the month was mostly anticyclonic, with winds often light and variable. Whereas at either end of January it was windier, with winds either from the southwest, or the southeast, ahead of Atlantic weather fronts, followed by northwesterly winds once the frontal systems had passed to the east. At Shoreham Airport, the year began very windy, with gusts from the southwest frequently exceeding 30 knots (34 mph). The highest gust was 45 knots (51 mph) in the late morning before the wind quickly abated early in the afternoon. Late in the evening of the 4th, southeasterly winds peaked at 33 knots (38 mph) and the southwesterly wind that followed the passage of the frontal system on the morning of the 5th also gusted to 33 knots (38 mph). It stayed windy for a further 24 hours, and the southwesterly wind gusted to 38 knots (43 mph) early in the morning on the 6th. The next spell of windy weather was not until the 23rd. On the afternoon of the 23rd, southwesterly gusts reached 35 knots (40 mph), and after the briefest of lulls, the southwesterly wind gusted to 45 knots (53 mph) on the morning of the 24th. The 26th was a windy day, but with the wind blowing from the south or southeast. The highest gust was in the afternoon, with 39 knots (45 mph) recorded. The southwesterly wind that followed lasted through until the 28th. A gust of 46 knots (53 mph) occurred in the early hours of the 27th, with several gusts over 40 knots (46 mph) during the rest of the day. Gusts of 41 knots (47 mph) were recorded overnight on the 28th, but then the wind began to decrease, and no further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred during the rest of the month.

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Shoreham, but there were several dull days around mid-month, and on these days, the cloud lowered on to the higher parts of the town and produced hill fog.
