Weather in Shoreham – February 2020

 

Very Wet, Mild and Windy 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during February 2020 in Shoreham was 10.1 Celsius (50F), and that was almost 2 Celsius (3.5F) above normal for the time of year.  The average minimum temperature was 5.4 Celsius (42F), and that was nearly 3 Celsius (5 F)  above the February normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 13.6 Celsius (56F) on the 23rd, and although no other days had a maximum above 12 Celsius (54F), there were 6 days with highs above 11 Celsius (52F), and a further 9 days when 10 Celsius (50F) was reached.  No cold days occurred during February, but on 6 occasions the maximum temperature was below 9 Celsius (48F). On the 6th a high of 8.3 Celsius (47F) was recorded, but on the 27th it was 0.1 Celsius (0.2F) cooler, making it the coolest day of the month.

Several mild nights occurred during February, and on the 16th the minimum temperature was 10.4 Celsius (50F). On 4 more nights the temperature remained above 9 Celsius (48F), with a further 4 nights having minima exceeding 8 Celsius (46F).  There were 8 nights when the temperature fell below 3 Celsius (37F), with 2 clusters, the 5th to 7th, and the 26th to 28th accounting for most of the chilly nights. On the 6th a minimum of minus 0.7 Celsius (31F), with the 28th only 0.1 Celsius (0.2F) less cold. 

The sea temperature was between 8 and 9 Celsius (46-48F) throughout the month.

Frost

A total of 2 air frosts were recorded during February and 10 grass frosts. Grass frosts occurred on 3 consecutive nights beginning on the 5th, and on the 6th the grass minimum was minus 5.6 Celsius (23F). On most nights the frost was very slight, but there  were 4 consecutive nights of grass frost beginning on the 25th, and on the last of these nights, the 28th, a minimum temperature of minus 6.1 Celsius (22F) was recorded.    

Rain

Rainfall in February amounted to 97.2 millimetres (3.8 ins.). This was well over double the monthly average.  There were 21 days of measurable rain, and that was 5 days above average.  Although nearly 8 millimetres (0.3 ins.) of rain fell on the 1st, 4 out of the following 5 days were dry. However, there was only 1 other completely dry day during the remainder of the month, and that was on the 11th. Some of the rain during the second week and around mid month was heavy.  On the 9th over 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) of rain fell, followed by 12.8 millimetres (0.5 ins.) on the 12th, the wettest day of the month. A further 10 millimetres (0.4 ins.) was recorded on the 15th, with over 9 millimetres (0.35 ins) measured on the 16th.  The rain was then somewhat lighter until the last week of February. A total of 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) fell on the 25th with 7.4 millimetres (0.3 ins.) on the 26th, with another 8.6 millimetres (0..35 ins.) added to the total on the 28th. 

Hail

Small hail was observed in Shoreham during squally showers on the 16th. Small hail also fell in a late afternoon shower on the 26th. Soft hail, or graupel fell in late morning and afternoon showers on the 25th. 

Thunder

No thunder was heard in Shoreham in February.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during February.   

Wind

Not only was the month changeable, but it was also frequently windy, with the winds almost entirely blowing from between southwest and northwest, with southwesterlies predominating.  At Shoreham Airport, the days with gusts exceeding 30 knots (34 mph) were as follows:- 1st- 33 knots (38 mph) from the southwest early afternoon; 4th- 33 knots (38 mph) from the northwest late morning; 9th- 53 knots (60 mph) from the southwest in the early evening after a day of gales. The strong winds continued throughout the 10th with 44 knots (50 mph) recorded in the early hours and during the evening. 11th – 38 knots (43 mph) from the west late afternoon; 13th – 42 knots (48 mph) from the southwest early morning; 15th – 43 knots (49 mph) from the southwest in the evening; 16th – 42 knots (48 mph) from southwest early morning. The rest of the 16th was very windy and a southwesterly gust of 46 knots (53 mph) occurred late in the evening; 17th – 41 knots (47 mph) from the southwest in the morning. 18th – 32 knots (37 mph) from the southwest early evening; 20th – 39 knots (44 mph) from the southwest early evening: 21st – 35 knots (40 mph) from the southwest late evening; 22nd – 38 knots (43 mph) from the southwest midday; 23rd – 41 knots (47 mph) from the southwest early morning; 24th – 39 knots from the southwest midday; 25th – 33 knots (39 (mph) from the northwest late afternoon; 26th – 32 knots (36 mph) from the west late afternoon; 27th – 31 knots (35 mph) from the northwest early afternoon; 28th – 31 knots (35 mph) from the southwest late afternoon, and finally; 29th – 44 knots (50 mph) from the southwest early in the morning.     

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Shoreham during February.

Weather in Shoreham – January 2020

Mild and Rather Dry 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during January 2020 in Shoreham was 9.3 Celsius (49F), and that was over 1 Celsius (<2F) above normal for the time of year.  The average minimum temperature was 5.4 Celsius (42F), and that was nearly 2 Celsius (3.5 F)  above the January normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 11.9 Celsius (54F) on both the 12th and 14th,  but there were 10 other days when the maximum was above 10 Celsius (50F), including 4 days with highs above 11 Celsius (52F).  The first half of the month was mildest, with only 2 of these milder days occurring after the 16th; the 30th and 31st, with highs of 10.4 Celsius (50F) and 10.5 Celsius (52F) respectively.  There were no cold days during January, although 10 days had maxima below 8 Celsius (46F), including 8 consecutive days commencing on the 18th. The other 2  days were the 1st and 10th. Only 3 of these cooler days had highs below 7 Celsius (45F). They were the 21st, 22nd and 24th, with the lowest maximum, 6.7 Celsius (44F), occurring on the 22nd.

Several mild nights occurred, mainly early in the month, and on 2 occasions minimum temperatures were 10 Celsius (50F) or higher. On the 3rd, a low of 10.0 (50F) was recorded, with 10.2 Celsius (50F) measured on the 8th. A further 9 nights had minima above 7 Celsius (45F), including 5 out of 6 nights from the 12th to 17th, and 4 of the last 6 nights of the month. There were a few rather cold nights,  and on 7 mornings minima below 3 Celsius (37F) were measured. On the 4th a low of 2.2 Celsius (36F) occurred, with 1.5 Celsius (34F) logged on the 29th. The other 5 nights were consecutive, beginning on the 18th, and all of them had minima below 1 Celsius (34F). The lowest temperature was minus 1.1 Celsius (30F) on the 19th. 

The sea temperature was mainly 9 Celsius (48F),  but dropped to 8 Celsius (46F) for a while during the third week.

Frost

A total of 2 air frosts were recorded during January. The first was on the 19th, and the second was on the 21st, when minus 0.7 Celsius (31F) was recorded. There were 9 grass frosts during January. Most of them were slight, but grass frosts occurred on 5 consecutive nights, starting on the 18th, and on 4 of these nights grass temperatures were minus 4.4 Celsius (24F) or lower. The lowest temperature was minus 6.1 Celsius (22F) on the 19th.    

Rain

Rainfall in January amounted to 40.4 millimetres (1.6 ins.). This was about 20% below average. However, there were 21 days of measurable rain, and that was 4 days above average. Only 2 completely dry days occurred during the first 17 days of the new year.   Even so, daily amounts were generally small, with just 3 days, the 13th, 14th and 16th, having totals above 2 millimetres (0.08 ins.). The 13th and 16th each had 4.2 millimetres (0.16 ins.). whilst the 14th managed 6.2 millimetres (0.24 ins.) making it the wettest day of the month.  No rain fell between the 18th and 25th as pressure rose to a record high. In Shoreham,  a reading of 1049.2 millibars occurred on the 19th, with the only comparable value occurring at Bexhill in 1882 when 1049.3 millibars were measured. On the same day this year, the pressure exceeded 1050 millibars in parts of Wales, and southwest and central southern England.  The last week of January became unsettled again, and although much of the rain was light, the 26th had 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) of rain, with 4.4 millimetres (0.18 ins.) falling on the 27th. 

Hail

Small hail was observed in Shoreham during squally rain on the afternoon of the 27th and again during a light rain and hail shower on the following afternoon.

Thunder

No thunder was heard in Shoreham in January.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during January.   

Wind

The generally changeable and mild month led to a predominance of southwesterly winds again, these accounting for more than half the daily readings.  As in December, there were twice as many days with southwesterly winds as compared to those from a northwesterly direction Breezes from other directions were largely absent.  The first half of the month and the last week of January had the strongest winds, and at Shoreham Airport,  there was a gust of 33 knots (38 mph) from the southwest on the morning of the 12th. with 41 knots (46 mph) from a similar direction on the evening of the 13th. The 14th was windy all day,  with gusts peaking at 43 knots (49 mph) in the evening. The windy weather continued into the early hours of the 15th when 40 knots (46 mph) were recorded. A westerly wind gusted to 31 knots (35 mph) early in the afternoon of the 17th. After a break, brisk winds returned on the evening of the 27th when 35 knots (40 mph) occurred,  with 37 knots (42 mph) logged on the afternoon of the 28th.     

Fog

The 1st, 7th, 8th and 9th were very misty at times, as was the 30th, but on the morning of the 31st the mist thickened into fog for a while.

A New Record

20th January 2020

The pressure rose to 1049 millibars last night. This was the highest in this area for at least 80 years, and possibly a lot longer. The pressure just exceeded 1050 millibars over much of Wales and southwest England The pressure was higher than this in England 88 years ago, and the UK record stands at 1053.6 millibars in Aberdeen on 31st January 1902. 

 

Weather in Shoreham – December 2019

Mild and Rather Wet 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during December 2019 in Shoreham was 9.6 Celsius (50F), and that was over 1 Celsius (<2F) above normal for the time of year.  The average minimum temperature was 4.7 Celsius (41F), and that was under 1 Celsius above the December normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 12.4 Celsius (54F) on the 19th, but there were 12 other days when the maximum was above 10 Celsius (50F), including 4 days with highs above 11 Celsius (52F). There were a further 10 days when the temperature exceeded 9 Celsius, and cold days were few and far between. The first 4 days of the month had minimum temperatures below 8 Celsius (46F), but there was only 1 other day below this figure before the end of the year. On the 2nd a high of 6.3 Celsius (43F) occurred,  the only day of the month with a minimum below 7 Celsius (45F).

No especially mild nights were noted during December, but on 2 occasions the temperature stayed above 10 Celsius (50F).  On both the 6th and 19th the minimum temperature was 10.3 Celsius (50F). There were 2 more nights with minima above 9 Celsius (48F), and a further 4 with lows above 7 Celsius (45F). Night-time temperatures were variable throughout the month, although the lowest values were generally during the first fortnight of December. On 9 occasions the temperature fell below 3 Celsius (37F), but only 3 of these colder nights occurred after the 12th. The first 12 nights of December had 6 nights with minima below 1 Celsius (34F), but with only 1 of these nights having a low under minus 1 Celsius (30F). On the 5th,  minus 2.4 Celsius (28F) was measured, the coldest night of the month. 

The sea temperature slowly fell from 10 or 11  Celsius (50-52F) at the beginning of the month to 9 Celsius (48F) by the third week. where it remained for the rest of December.

Frost

A total of 3 air frosts were recorded during December. Apart from on the 5th, air temperatures dipped below freezing on both the 10th and 12th. However, frost was very slight with lows of minus 0.3 Celsius (32F) and 0.2 Celsius (32F) respectively. There were 13 grass frosts during the month, and although 6 of these occurred after mid month, they were slight,  with grass minima staying above minus 3 Celsius (27F). Grass lows were under minus 3 on 4 nights earlier in the month, with the lowest reading of minus 4.4 Celsius (24F) occurring on the 5th.    

Rain

A total of 97.8  millimetres (3.9 ins.) of rain fell during December and that was about 25% above the monthly average. There were 21 days of measurable rain, and that was around 5 days above normal for December. No measurable rain fell on the first 4 days of the month, but then the 9th was the sole dry day until the 27th. Initially rain was not particularly heavy, but over 6 millimetres (0.25ins.) fell on 7th with a further 8 millimetres (0.3 ins.) on the 12th. In the week before Christmas spells of rain falling on the totally saturated ground led to extensive flooding on the 21st. Although amounts were not remarkable, there were nearly 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) on the 16th, over 8 millimetres (0.3 ins.) on the 18th, and 17.6 millimetres (0.7 ins.) on the 19th. This was topped up by nearly 7 millimetres (0.3 ins.) on the 19th and close on 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) on the 21st. Thereafter, rain was lighter, although 7 millimetres (0.3 ins.) were recorded on the 26th.   The last 5 days of month were dry apart from 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins) of dew on the last day of the month. 

Hail

Small hail was observed in Shoreham during a mid-afternoon shower on the 11th.

Thunder

No thunder was heard in Shoreham in December.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during December.   

Wind

Southwesterly and northwesterly winds predominated during December with twice as many sou’westers as nor’westers. Early and late in the month pressure was relatively high and winds were mainly light or moderate, but the second and third weeks were very changeable and cyclonic with winds strong at times. At Shoreham Airport, gusts exceeded 30 knots (34 mph) during the 6th, peaking at 33 knots (38 mph), with 39 knots (44 mph) on the evening of the 8th,  with 41 knots (47 mph) occurring overnight into the 9th. A gust of 44 knots (50 mph) occurred on the passage of a cold front during the evening of the 10th, with blustery showers creating a gust of 37 knots (42 mph) around midday on the 11th. In a very breezy period, gusts between 34 and 39 knots (39-45 mph)  occurred on each of the following 4 days. Southwesterly gusts reached 34 knots (39 mph) early on the 21st. Apart from gusts of 33 knots (38 mph) on the afternoon of the 26th, there were no more gusts exceeding 30 knots (34 mph) during the remainder of the month.    

Fog

On the 30th there was fog until after mid morning.

Weather in Shoreham – November 2019

Rather Cold and Damp 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during November 2019 in Shoreham was 10.3 Celsius (50F), and that was about 0.5 Celsius (1F) below normal for the time of year.  Daytime temperatures were, on average, the lowest in November since 2010.  The average minimum temperature was 5.8 Celsius (42F), and that was only very slightly below the November normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 15.1 Celsius (59F) on the 1st, but only 1 other reading above 13 Celsius (55F) occurred; this was on the 3rd when 13.2 Celsius (56F) was recorded. However, 12.9 Celsius (55F) was measured on both the 2nd and 26th. Highs exceeded 10 Celsius (50F) on a further 10 occasions during November with all these milder days occurring from the 1st to the 10th, as well as from the 22nd to the 28th. There were no particularly cold days during November, but there were 7 days when the temperature stayed below 9 Celsius (48F). These colder temperatures occurred between the 14th and 17th, on the 20th, and on the last 2 days of the month. The lowest maximum was 7.4 Celsius (45F) on the 14th.

No especially mild nights were logged during November, but on 3 nights the temperature stayed above 10 Celsius (50F).  The first 2 nights of the month had minima of 10.2 Celsius (50F) and 11.6 Celsius (53F) respectively, with 10.4 Celsius (50F) recorded on the 26th. Only 12 other nights had minima above 5 Celsius (41F), with most of these milder nights occurring during the first and fourth weeks. The second and third weeks had some of the colder nights, but only 5 nights had minima below 3 Celsius (37F), with just 2 of these colder nights having minima below 1 Celsius (34F). The lowest temperature was minus 1.4 Celsius (30F) on the 19th, although a minimum of 0.1 Celsius (32F) was recorded on the last night of the month. 

The sea temperature steadily fell from 13 Celsius (55F) at the beginning of November to 10 or 11  Celsius (50-52F) by the end of the month.

Frost

There was 1 air frost during November (the 19th), but 8 grass frosts occurred. Apart from the 30th, when minus 2.8 Celsius (27F) was recorded, all the grass frosts were sandwiched between the 8th and 19th. The grass frosts were mostly very slight with only 2 further nights measuring temperatures below minus 2 Celsius (28F). The 9th had a grass low of minus 2.2 Celsius (28F), with minus 4.4  Celsius (24F) occurring on the 19th.    

Rain

A total of 100.8  millimetres (4 ins.) of rain fell during November and that was about 15% above the monthly average. There were 21 days of measurable rain, and that was around 5 days above normal for November. The month got off to a very wet start with nearly 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) of rain falling on the 1st and 17.4 millimetres (0.7 ins.) on the 2nd.  A further 9.4 millimetres (0.4 ins.) fell on the 4th, and by the end of the first week over 41 millimetres (1.6 ins.) of rain had fallen. Over 11 millimetres (0.4 ins.) fell on the 13th and rain fell for most of the day on the 15th. However, no measurable rain fell between the 16th and 20th. The very changeable weather then continued with over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) recorded on the 23rd, 26th and 27th. However, the last 2 days of the month were dry. 

Hail

No hail was observed in Shoreham during November.

Thunder

No thunder was heard in Shoreham in November.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during November.   

Wind

Southwesterly winds only occurred on 16% of the days during November, with double that total blowing from the northwest. In a very cyclonic month (the average pressure was only just above 1000 mb) it was not surprising that there was also a fair representation of winds from both southeast and northeast. The 2nd was a particularly windy day, and at Shoreham Airport southwesterly gusts of 38 knots (43 mph) late on the evening of the 1st, steadily increased during the night and peaked late in the morning of the 2nd at 57 knots (65 mph), but with gusts not falling below 30 knots (34 mph) until late in the evening. Unusually for an autumn month, no further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) were recorded during the remainder of the month.    

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Shoreham during November, although it was very misty at times on the 1st.

Weather in Shoreham – October 2019

 

Changeable and Wet 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during October 2019 in Shoreham was 14.9 Celsius (59F), and that was very close to normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 9.6 Celsius (50F), and that was also very close to the October normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 18.4 Celsius (65F) on the 1st, but there were highs of 17.3 Celsius (63F) and 17.4 Celsius (63F) on the 6th and 13th respectively.  There were a further 9 days when the temperature exceeded 16 Celsius (61F), but only 2 of these milder days occurred after mid month.  There were 9 days when the temperature failed to reach 13 Celsius (55F), but only 1 day, the 12th with a high of 12.7 Celsius (55F), occurred before mid month. A chilly end to the month led to 4 out of the last 5 days having minima below 12 Celsius (54F).  The lowest temperature was 12.3 Celsius (54F) on the 28th, the coolest day of the month.   

There were 3 notably mild nights during October. The 1st, with a low of 15.8 Celsius (60F), the 11th, with minimum of 15.3 Celsius (60F), and the 26th, when the temperature failed to fall below 15.4 Celsius (60F). There were no further minima above 13 Celsius (55F) and only 3 lows between 12 and 13 Celsius (54-55F). Of the 17 days with minima below 10 Celsius (50F), not surprisingly,  only 6 of these cooler nights  occurred before mid month.  On 5 of these colder nights the temperature dipped below 6 Celsius (43F), but only 2 had minima below 5 Celsius (41F). On the 3rd a minimum of 4.0 Celsius (39F) occurred, with 2.6 Celsius (37F) recorded on the 28th. 

The sea temperature steadily fell from 17 Celsius (63F) at the beginning of October to 13 or 14  Celsius (55-57F) by the end of the month.

Frost

There was no air frost during October and just 1 grass frost. On the 28th a grass minimum temperature of minus 1.1 Celsius (30F) occurred.    

Rain

There were  89.4  millimetres (3.5 ins.) of rain during October and that was about 70% above the monthly average. There were 23 days of measurable rain, and that was around 6 days above normal for October. Apart from on the 2nd, rain fell on each of the first 18 days of the month.  Much of the rain was fairly light during the first week, but it then became heavier, and on the 11th 7.6 millimetres (0.3 ins.)  were recorded, with 8.8 millimetres (0.35 ins.) falling on the following day. Heavy showers produced 16 millimetres (0.65 ins.) on the 17th with further showers giving 8.2 millimetres on 18th. From the 19th, the weather quietened down somewhat with only 6 further rain days during the remainder of the month. In this period, a total of 21.6 millimetres (0.8 ins.) fell, but it was largely because of 2 bouts of heavy rain. On the 24th 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) fell, and on the 26th 8.2 millmetres (0.3 ins.) were measured. 

Hail

No hail was observed in Shoreham during October.

Thunder

Showers were accompanied by thunder on 3 days during October. On the 14th there was 1 rumble of thunder during the late afternoon.  Several rumbles of thunder were heard early in the evening of the 17th, and on the following day there was thunder early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during October.   

Wind

On a majority of days, the wind blew from between southwest and northwest and with the unsettled nature of the month it was often quite strong. At Shoreham Airport,  southwesterly winds gusted to 32 knots (37 mph) overnight on the 4th, followed  by a similar gust from a similar direction late on the afternoon of the 8th.  Southwesterly winds became strong on the afternoon of the 10th and stayed brisk until the evening of the 11th. The highest gusts were 32 knots (37 mph) on the 10th and 39 knots (45 mph) late on the morning of the 11th. Southwesterly winds gusted to 37 knots (42 mph) early on the afternoon of the 13th, with 35 knots (40 mph) and 39 knots (45 mph) measured during the evening and afternoon of the 17th and 18th respectively.  The strong winds continued into the early hours of the 19th when 34 knots (39 mph) were recorded.  The next bout of strong southwest winds commenced on the afternoon of the 25th and abated during the evening of the 26th. Gusts of 33 knots (38 mph) were measured late on the 25th, with 35 knots (40 mph) occurring  on the afternoon of the 26th. These were the last strong winds of the month.    

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Shoreham during October.

Weather in Shoreham – September 2019

Sunny and warm, then windy and wet 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during September 2019 in Shoreham was 19.9 Celsius (68F), and that was around 1.5 degrees Celsius (3F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 12.2 Celsius (54F), and that was very close to the September normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 23.3 Celsius (74F) on the 21st, but there were 13 other days when the temperature rose above 20 Celsius (68F), including 9 of the 11 days between the 10th and 20th. There were no particularly cool days during September, but maximum temperatures were below 20 Celsius (68F) from 5th to 9th inclusive, and from the 22nd until the end of the month. However, only 2 days had highs below 18 Celsius (64F). The 29th had a maximum of 17.8 Celsius (64F), but the coolest day of the month was the 9th when the temperature peaked at 16.3 Celsius (61F). 

There were a few fairly warm nights during September, these mainly occurring at either end of the month. On 2 occasions during the first week, and on 3 occasions during the last 9 days of September, the temperature stayed above 15 Celsius (59F), but only 1 of these days had a minimum above 17 Celsius (63F). That was on the 22nd when a low of 18.4 Celsius (65F) was recorded. There were several rather cool nights during the month, and temperatures dipped below 10 Celsius (50F) on 9 nights. However, there were only 2 of these cooler nights with minima below 8 Celsius (46F). On the 6th 7.3 Celsius  (45F) was measured, with 7.2 Celsius (45F) occurring on the 8th. 

The sea temperature was 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) at the beginning of September, but slowly fell to 17 Celsius (63F) by the end of the month.

Frost

There were neither air nor grass frosts during  September.  The lowest grass minimum temperature was 3.3 Celsius (38F) recorded on the 6th.    

Rain

There were  51.4  millimetres (2 ins.) of rain during September and that was very close to the monthly average. There were 15 days of measurable rain, and that was about 3 days above normal for September. Although the first 3 weeks of September were unsettled at times,  particularly during the second week, it was often sunny, especially during the afternoons, and more generally through the third week. Rain fell on just 7 days between the 1st and 22nd inclusive and the total for this period was a meagre 8.6 millimetres (0.3 ins.). The highest daily total was 4.6 millimetres (0.2 ins.) on the 3rd, with no rain measured between the 13th and 20th inclusive.  The end of the month became very unsettled with rain recorded on  each of the last 10 days of September.  Although much of the rain was light and drizzly,   some heavy bursts occurred, and on the 23rd a total of 16.2 millimetres (0.6 ins.) was measured. A further 6.2 millimetres (0.2 ins.) fell on the 24th, with over 10 millimetres (0.4 ins.) recorded on the 28th.

There was no thunder heard during September.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during September.   

Wind

Although September was a westerly month, pressure was relatively high during the first 3 weeks, and winds were mainly gentle or moderate, although some brisk afternoon sea breezes occurred. During the third week, breezes were generally from the east or northeast, but thereafter the pressure fell, and the weather became increasingly cyclonic, with mainly southwesterly winds becoming fresh or strong at times. At Shoreham Airport,  southwesterly winds gusted to 32 knots (37 mph) on the afternoon of the 11th, but the next brisk winds were not until the 23rd when 30 knot (34 mph) southerly gusts were recorded in the evening. The 24th was a breezy day with southwesterly gusts peaking at 31 knots (35 mph) in the late afternoon.  The breezy weather persisted with 33 knots (38 mph) occurring during the afternoon of the 25th. Gusts of 30 knots (34 mph) were measured on the 26th, and the 27th was windier with 38 knots (43 mph) from the southwest during the afternoon.  There was no let up as southwesterly gusts exceeded 30 knots (34 mph) on the 28th, with 40 knots (46 mph) occurring early on the 29th. This was the highest gust of the month and the 30th was much calmer.    

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Shoreham during September.

Weather in Shoreham – August 2019

Dry and Rather Warm 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during August 2019 in Shoreham was 22.2 Celsius (72F), and that was around 2 degrees Celsius (3.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 14.3 Celsius (58F), and that was very close to the August normal.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 28.2 Celsius (83F) on the 24th, but there were 3 other days when the temperature rose above 25 Celsius (77F), with all these very warm days occurring between the 24th and 27th. On most days maxima were between 20 and 25 Celsius, but there were a few cooler days. On 5 occasions the temperature failed to rise above 20 Celsius (68F). All of these cooler days occurred between the 10th and 18th, but the only day with a maximum below 18 Celsius (64F) was the 14th with a high of 17.6 Celsius  (64F). 

There were a few warm nights during August, and on the 9th the temperature only fell to 19.2. Celsius (67F). There were 2 other nights when the temperature stayed above 17 Celsius (63F), including the 28th when the minimum temperature was 17.8 Celsius (64F). The coolest nights tended to occur in the second half of the month, and of the 11 nights with minima below 13 Celsius (55F), only 3 occurred before mid month. Only 2 nights had lows under 10 Celsius (50F). The 13th had a minimum of 9.9 Celsius (50F), with  the 21st dipping to 9.6 Celsius (49F). 

The sea temperature was 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) throughout the month.

Frost

There were neither air nor grass frosts during  August.  The lowest grass minimum temperature was 6.1 Celsius (43F) recorded on both the 13th and 20th.    

Rain

There were  28.2  millimetres (1.1 ins.) of rain during August and that was around 40% below the monthly average. There were 15 days of measurable rain, and that was about 3 days above normal for August. The first 2 days of August were dry, but the weather then turned changeable, although by the 10th only just over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) of rain had fallen. The total for the day on the 11th was 5.6 millimetres (0.2 ins.) with another 4 millimetres (0.15 ins.) on the 12th. Rain fell for much of the day on the 16th, and the total of 6 millimetres (0.25 ins.) made it the wettest day of the month. After the 16th rain was light and patchy with no daily total exceeding 0.6 millimetres (0.03 ins.). In fact the total between the 20th and the end of the month was less than 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.).

Hail

No hail was observed in Shoreham during August.

Thunder

There was only 1 day with thunder occurring during August, and that was late afternoon on the 12th when 4 rumbles were heard during a 6-minute period.

Snow

There was no sleet or snow observed in Shoreham during August.   

Wind

August was very much a southwesterly month with winds from that direction dominating on 22 days. Although winds were often light in the mornings, during afternoons sea breezes were often fresh and occasionally strong. At Shoreham Airport,  southwesterly winds gusted to 31 knots (35 mph) on the afternoon of the 7th, but on the 10th winds gusted above 40 knots (46 mph) through much of the night, morning and afternoon, peaking at 47 knots (54 mph) early in the afternoon. The wind was strong enough to break branches of several trees around the town. The wind remained blustery and 31 knots (35 mph) was recorded on the afternoon of the 11th, with a similar velocity occurring on the afternoon of the 14th. On the evening of the 16th, a gust of 36 knots (41 mph) was measured, and then 33 knots (38 mph) occurred on the afternoon of the 18th.  The following afternoon had 32 knots (37 mph), but that was the final breezy afternoon of the month.    

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Shoreham during August.
